In a landmark move for the construction industry, the government has announced a complete overhaul of the building consent system, a change that has been long-awaited by many in the sector. The reform, spearheaded by Minister Chris Penk, will replace the existing system of local consenting authorities with a more streamlined approach.

The introduction of a single point of contact for building consents will bring significant benefits, especially to construction companies like CBS, who have been calling for a solution to the often slow and fragmented process.

“This is something CBS has been supportive of for a long while now,” says Carl Taylor, the CEO of CBS. The current system, which involves nearly 60 different consenting authorities, often leads to unnecessary delays and red tape that can stall projects for weeks or even months.

The new system aims to make builders more accountable while ensuring that councils can offer better building control functions. By allowing one central authority to oversee the process, the government hopes to improve efficiency, speed up the consent process, and allow for better control over building standards.

Carl points out, “Cutting red tape and offering a streamlined process will not only make things easier for builders but also improve outcomes for clients who often bear the brunt of these delays.”

This reform is one of the most significant changes the industry has seen in recent years, and CBS is excited to support its implementation, which will lead to a more efficient and accountable system for all involved.
